FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 24, 2026
BURNABY, B.C.: Bruce Banman, Conservative MLA for Abbotsford South and Conservative Party of BC leadership candidate, will join concerns residents and community members at a rwlly located a Burnaby City Hall today as Burnaby Council considers a proposed motion related to BC Housing’s planned shelter operations at 3020 Gilmore.
Banman will meet with residents and be available to media to discuss the need for clear operational plans, meaningful community consultation, and a balanced approach that protects both vulnerable people and neighbourhood safety.
Quote
“Communities are tired of being told to accept big decisions after the fact. If government agencies want public trust, they need enforceable plans for safety, operations, and neighbourhood impacts before doors open.”
Background
BC Housing purchased the two-storey office building at 3020 Gilmore in March 2025 and is planning a new permanent shelter at the site.
The motion, brought by councillor Richard Lee, states a petition with nearly 4,000 signatures opposing a shelter at the site has been delivered to the City of Burnaby and BC Housing.
The motion seeks Council approval to request, prior to occupancy approval, that BC Housing and the project operator submit to the City’s satisfaction:
- a Good Neighbour Plan, and
- an Operational Management Plan, developed with consultation of surrounding residents and community stakeholders.
The motion also requests BC Housing consider designating the site a High-Barrier shelter, and requests staff report back to Council on progress.
